Learn About the Region

We invite you to visit the Mountains of Malopolska

 Poland's top tourist destination..

Pieniny is a region we're inviting you to visit Region of Poland as small as it is delightfully picturesque. Lying on the Slovak border east of the Podhale region and north of the Tatras. The Pieniny Mountains extend for some 22 miles in a narrow range rising to 1,000 feet. These old limestone mountains have weathered in many wonderful ways. Just east of the National Park is the spa resort town of Szczawnica. Queen of Polish Spas is situated in one of the most beautiful parts of Poland, on the foot of North - East part of Jurassic limestones known as the Pieniny Mountains and on the border of Beskid Sadecki Mountains, in the picturesque valley of the Grajcarek River. The region is a transportation hub, well connected by a dense network of roads, highways and linked to the most important historic centers of southern Poland such as Krakow and Zakopane. Region itself is "tucked away" which perhaps explains its charm. It is easily accessible, but preserved, extraordinarily rich in amazing views, one of a kind scienic routes, monuments, old wooden architecture and historic sites that you can't pass!  More about the Region:

It is worth visiting Malopolska in order to understand Polish history and tradition and to see the beauty of Polish nature. Krakow, the former capital of Poland, is just a hundred kilometres from the ridges of the Tatra Mountains and the picturesque Beskidy and Gorce Mountains. Where else

if not in Malopolska will you find so many grand manor houses, churches, ruins of castles and

charming towns? Add to this the virgin forests, the swift mountain rivers, the curious rocks -world-scale rarities. At present, the Malopolska Region (province) is divided into 19 districts and 3 municipal districts, which in turn consist of 182 communes, and it covers an area of over 15,000 square kilometres, which constitutes some 5% of the area of Poland.

Landscape-wise, Malopolska is very varied. In the south there are the towering Tatras, the only Polish alpine mountains. The Beskidy are gentle mountain ranges with beautiful woods, fields and valley lakes. The calcareous Pieniny are quite different, and the place where the river

Dunajec breaks through the mountains is a monument of nature of world-wide significance. The valley of the biggest Polish river, the Vistula, cuts through the voivodship from the west to the east, creating a natural borderline between the mountains to the south and the lowlands to the north, the only exception on the northern side of the river being the Krakow.

The attractions of the Upland include calcareous monadnocks, gorges and caves. Among the most famous are the Pieniny and the Tatra Mountains National Parks, plus nearly 100 nature sanctuaries and landscape parks. The historic and artistic centre of the voivodship is in Krakow - the former capital of Poland, the city where kings resided, were crowned and buried. The Wawel hill, topped with the royal castle and the cathedral, is a national sanctity, and the great works of art accumulated over centuries remain a testimony to the might of the country and its rulers.

The main attractions of the city include: the Mariacki (St Mary's) Church with a late-medieval altar by Vit Stoss, the gothic Franciscan church with an original Art Nouveau decoration by a great Polish artist
Stanislaw Wyspianski, and the late-Baroque Pauline church perched on a small hill known as Skalka ("the Little Rock"). Particularly interesting are the exhibits at the Czartoryski Museum, the National Museum, the Archaeological Museum and the Krakow Historical Museum with its numerous branches.

The Old Town of Krakow, the town of Wieliczka with its ancient salt mine, and the monastic complex in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska have been entered onto the
UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. The UNESCO list also includes four wooden churches in the towns of: Binarowa, Debno, Sekowa and Lipnica Murowana!
